Chile's most celebrated poets are those that give a voice to the people, making their words resonate in the hearts of Chileans and the national identity of Chile.
Pablo Neruda
Considered one of the greatest South American poets, Pablo Neruda's most celebrated works include his first book, "Crepusculario" (Twilight) and Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada"(Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair). Because of his great contributions as a poet he was appointed honorary consul to Burma and later served in Argentina and Spain. Known as the people's poet, he remains in the heart of Chile's national identity.
Gabriela Mistral
This educator, diplomat, cultural minister, and poet was the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945. Her poetry was highly regarded for its powerful emotions that resonated in the hearts of Chileans. Her most famous works are "Sonnets of Death in 1914," which earned her a national poetry prize, "Desolacion" in 1922, and "Ternurna," which was published in 1925.
Jose Donoso
Considered an innovative stylist, Jose Donoso's works include the novels "Coronacion," "El lugar sin limites" and "El ovsceneo parjaro de la noche." Many of his works deal with sexuality and psychology.
Roverto Castillo Sandoval
A Chilean author, Sandoval wrote "Muriendo por la dulce patria mia": which was based on the life of Chilean heavyweight boxer Arturo Godoy. He currently teaches Latin American and Comparative Literature at Haverford College in Philadelphia and has published short fiction, poetry, and travel chronicles for Chilean periodicals and websites.
