Hanga Roa Shopping
Hanga Roa's two main streets, Avenida Atamu Teken and Avenida Te Pito O Te Henua are home to dozens of souvenir shops. The open air market Feria Municipal on Av. Atamu Tekena has reasonable prices on beautifully crafted jewelry, and Mercado Arsenal on Av. Ara Roa Rakei sells a variety of local crafts; shell necklaces, wood carvings and stone carvings to name few. If you're looking for a mini-moai, you'll find it here. Hoto Matu'a's Favorite Shop on Av. Atamu Tekena has an array of t-shirts.
For the sake of conservation, do not purchase any coral products, as harvesting coral upsets the balance of the area's fragile marine ecosystem.
The official currency in Easter Island is the Chilean Peso, but many shops will also accept US dollars. Most vendors won't accept credit cards, and those that do often charge a service fee, so it's best to pay in cash. The island has only one ATM machine, so make sure to carry cash with you from Santiago.
