Hanga Roa Overview

Hanga Roa is where all flights on the island arrive and depart. You won't have to go far to find accommodations, restaurants, or shops, as this is the only village on the island with any commerce. Tours to other parts of the island depart from Hanga Roa, and most can be arranged at your hotel. Hanga Roa's tiny Playa Pea beach is where many locals spend warm afternoons. While Hanga Roa makes a great jumping off point, make sure to leave the village to explore some of the world's most amazing snorkeling and outdoor activities, and cultural artifacts.

The two main streets, Avenida Atamu Teken and Avenida Te Pito O Te Henua are home to dozens of souvenir shops that sell mini-moai and other trinkets. Restaurants and cafes along these streets serve everything from cold drinks or a cup of joe to fresh fruit juices, empanadas, sandwiches, and local fish dishes.

Accomodations in Hanga Roa are typically at a "guest house," with nice rooms and some with shared bathroom facilities. The Hanga Roa residents are incredibly friendly and helpful-considering that nearly all of the island's 3,800 residents live in Hanga Roa, that speaks very highly of Easter Islanders in general. They truly are some of the friendliest folk in the world, and it's a pleasure to get to know them during your stay.
