Easter Island Transportation

The transportation to Easter Island is the most daunting part of the trip-but once you've committed to the experience and seen the island for yourself, you'll never regret it.

Getting to Easter Island
Flights to Easter Island depart two to four times per week from Santiago, Chile, and Papeete, Tahiti depending on the time of year. All flights are on LAN, the Chilean national airline and cost roughly $800-$1,000 USD round trip from Santiago. Be prepared to pay a small exit fee in cash when you depart from the tiny Mataveri International Airport.

Getting Around Easter Island
The island is very small, so it's easy to get around. Taxi service is reliable in Hanga Roa, though rates increase after 8 p.m. and during peak times of the year, namely January-February.

Bus tours of the island's major archaeological sites are common, but consider hiring a private guide if you want to get off the beaten track. Haumaka Tours has English-speaking guides who can show you some less visited spots in addition to the highlights. Mahinatur (Av. Atamu Tekena s/n; 32/551-513; www.mahinatur.cl) and Manu Iti (Ac. Tuukoihu s/n; 32/100-313; www.manuiti.de) are reputable agencies with knowledgeable staff, but make sure the guides speak your language!

While guided tours are convenient, the best way to see the Island's sites is by renting a vehicle and taking along a guidebook and map. A four wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended, as unpaved gravel or dirt roads are the norm. Fill up at the island's only gas station before departing from Hanga Roa.
