Puerto Varas Overview
Puerto Varas, a town of roughly of 35,000 people on the Llanquihe Lake, is located 12 miles north of Puerto Montt, with the Calbuco and Osborno volcanoes looming nearby. The air fills with a sweet floral aroma when the town's stunning rose gardens are in bloom from December to March each year.
Puerto Varas's restaurants, cafes, and shops are charming, and with its German-inspired style, it boasts one of the best collections of middle European architecture in the country. This up-and-coming town is the starting point for many excursions in the nearby mountains and rivers, and is even becoming a popular destination among vacationing Santiaguinos (Chileans who reside in Santiago, the nation's capitol).
Options for adventure are unbounded, from rafting, kayaking, and fly fishing trips on the Rio Petrohue, to horseback riding excursions in the foothills of Volcan Calbuco, guided photo treks in the nearby mountains, helicopter rides over the area's many lakes and mountains, bike excursions in the hills, and finally, canyoning and repelling near Volcan Calbuco. Many outfitters' guides speak English, French, and German in addition to their native Spanish and welcome international guests.
