Dining and Restaurants in Santiago
Like most international cities, Santiago is replete with restaurants serving food from all corners of the globe. For the sake of an authentic Chilean dining experience, we're going to focus on the more traditional Chilean establishments. The best places to look for restaurants are in Barrio Bellavista, Barrio Santa Lucia, Providencia and Las Condes.
Bellavista's range of eateries, from casual to upscale establishments offers a selection of Chilean and seafood restaurants. Azul Profundo's wine rack covers the wall from floor to ceiling, and the atmosphere is inviting, fresh, and lively. Its variety of seafood is its claim to fame-- they serve everything from sea bass and swordfish to shark, squid and salmon. If you're looking for an elegant upscale dining experience, try the traditional Chilean menu at El Camino Real, atop Cerro San Cristobal in Parque Metropolitano. The restaurant offers unparalleled views of the city on a clear day or night with its floor to ceiling windows. The extensive wine list boasts vintages from some of Chile's best vineyards. For great food and friendly service at a more moderate price, try El Caramano.
Santa Lucia's greatest concentration of restaurants centers around Plaza Mulato Gil de Castro. For outstanding bread and pastries, try Emporio La Rosa. Or head to Don Victorino for a scrumptious lunch in a laid-back atmosphere-prices are reasonable and the food is superb. Inventive R is full of character and style, and the first-rate food is relatively inexpensive.
Las Condes's Café Melba serves breakfast until 6 p.m. Sip your café latte from a large white bowl out on the patio and take in the scene on the street. If you're looking for seafood, Coco Loco's menu is idyllic. Their sumptuous seafood is served in a fanciful atmosphere, where impressionistic murals of waves dance on the walls-two guests have the unique experience of eating in a vibrantly painted row boat.
Providencia's chic dining scene has plenty of options to choose from. For large portions of vegetarian fare or seafood, head to Café del Patio-if you're not hungry when you walk in the door, you'll be ravenous by the time you're done reading the menu. If you're looking to sample a variety of Chilean cuisine, peruse the lunch buffet at the Sheraton Hotel's El Cid. Widely praised by critics as one of the best restaurants Santiago has to offer, El Cid's grilled seafood entrees are exquisite.
