Santiago Lodging
The most common lodging options in Santiago are the hotels, residenciales, and hostels.
The barrios of Las Condes and Providencia are where you'll find higher-end hotels, though they can be far from restaurants and nightlife. And while Santiago Centro lacks the nightlife of barrios like Bellavista and Santa Lucia, it has the highest concentration of mid-range hotel options and is the easiest to access via the city's extensive and well maintained metro system. Barrios Brasil and Paris Londres have the greatest concentration of residenciales and hostels. Expect friendly service no matter where you stay-the Chileans are known for that.
Hotels
Santiago has a range of hotels, ranging from top-quality ones which often have gourmet restaurants, cafes and bars, to one-star budget hotels in the less attractive parts of the city. The barrios of Las Condes and Providencia are where you'll find the higher-end hotels, though many of them are located a short taxi ride from the trendy restaurants and clubs where you're likely to end the night.
Residenciales
While there are mid-range hotels in Santiago Central, many visitors choose to stay in residenciales in barrios Brasil and Paris Londres. The residenciales are usually bed and breakfast style accommodations where you'll have a room in someone's house or apartment with common bathroom facilities. At times these accommodations are shared with a few other travelers, though not like the 12-person bunk rooms of a hostel. Many residenciales also have one or two rooms for couples, which often have a private bath and full size bed. The caretakers are typically very friendly and are more than happy to dole out advice on any aspect of the city.
Youth Hostels
For the budget-conscious traveler, shared rooms at Santiago's hostels are a great option-unlike the residenciales, hostels usually have a kitchen where you can cook your own meals, as well as a common room where you can socialize. The shared space often creates opportunities to meet other travelers and share stories of your respective adventures. Breakfast is not typically included in the room rates.
