Santiago de Chile
Santiago is Chile's bustling and colorful capital. Nearly a third of the country's population lives in or around the city, which gives you an idea of just how diverse it is. Before you head out from this "gateway to the Andes," take the time to explore the colorful places that give Santiago its charm.
Amble through the city's diverse neighborhoods, called barrios, and sample the local food and wine to get a taste for what Chile's all about. Take in the sights, from churches to architecture to museums. Stroll down Santiago's main boulevard, the Alameda, to take advantage of the shopping opportunities, from up-scale shops to boutiques to markets. See the Santiago Shopping Guide for a complete description of where to find exactly what it is you're in the market for.
Relax at a cozy cafe, or dine at a traditional or trendy restaurant-- see the Restaurant and Nightlife guides for more information on where to cure your culinary cravings, or quench your thirst with a frosty belinda.
The Santiago Lodging Guide has a number options to choose from. While the city has more than a dozen five-star hotels, the residenciales, which range from bed and breakfasts to simpler hotel-type accommodations, are an excellent place to rest your weary cabeza at the end of an exhilarating day.
Day trips from Santiago include a tour of some of the country's best vineyards, and there are tour companies that can arrange half or full-day trips to the vineyards, which is advisable if you plan on imbibing. Some of the country's best ski slopes are a short drive from the city, though the snow only sticks around between May and October. Visit Valle Nevado's 300 ski-able acres, or charter a helicopter at the resort to whisk you away to some of the best snow-riding you'll ever do. Take a look at our Santiago Side Trip Guide for some more options, and don't be afraid to explore!
Santiago's summer season extends from November to February, the warmest months being January and February. March to October are considered the winter months, when skiing is best, but travel to the far south is limited. For more information on Santiago's climate, visit the Santiago Weather page.
